WHAT IS C-FOS?
c-Fos is the protein product of the c-fos immediate early gene (IEG) and the most widely used marker of recent neuronal activation. Neurons switch it on within about an hour of being activated, for example by a drug, so labeling c-Fos with antibodies or ISH identifies the cells that responded. c-Fos does not report inhibition; for that, see pPDH, a marker of neuronal inhibition.
